Student city ranking: what’s their method?

Published each year, l’Étudiant’s official ranking goes over 43 French cities with a fine-tooth comb and examines the 5 following criteria:

  • The training offer, with the number of training programs available and students’ success rate in Bachelor’s degree programs.
  • Drawing power, which includes whether or not the number of students has increased over the past 10 years and the proportion of international students.
  • Student life, with the proportion of students to the number of inhabitants, the cultural offer as well as local initiatives.
  • The living environment, i.e. the cost of rent, public transportation, climate, parks and green spaces and athletic facilities.
  • Employment and economic vitality with energetic employment over the past 10 years as well as the unemployment rate.

Points are attributed to each criterion, which thereby makes it possible to determine the best city for students.

Toulouse, ranked one of the best student cities in France

For the fifth straight year, the Pink City has been placed at the top of l’Etudiant’s ranking with 117 total points.

In terms of culture, Toulouse has a wide variety of museums, municipal libraries and other performance spaces… With this type of cultural offer, more than 700,000 Toulousians went to a museum in 2019, while movie theaters sold 5 million tickets that same year.

Regarding the quality of life, the capital of Occitanie is also considered the best of the best with its many green spaces, including the banks of the Garonne, which are regularly teeming with students at the first glimpse of sunlight (moreover, Toulouse has 84 days of sunshine a year compared to only 51 in Paris).

For students on a tight budget, Toulouse is the ideal destination since a 24-m2 studio only costs around €469 compared to €550 in Bordeaux and nearly €950 in Paris. For transportation, plan on spending around €110 per year for the annual public transportation package: one of the lowest prices in mainland France!

A driving force of the aeronautic economy, Toulouse represents a dynamic labor pool. Most students find, once they have their degree in hand, a position in regional companies looking to develop: exactly what is needed to strengthen the city’s drawing power with young graduates.
